TAN Buster Font Free Download

TAN - BUSTER

If you searched for a TAN Buster free download, the short answer is that there isn’t an official one. TanType Co. sells TAN Buster as a commercial display font, and we could not find a free, demo or personal-use file published by the foundry. The full font comes with a paid licence, starting at $17 for one desktop seat on Creative Market.

TAN Buster free download: is there a legitimate one?

We checked the official Creative Market listing in October 2026. It sells licences and has a type-in preview box, but no demo download. The “trial fonts” it mentions belong to Creative Market’s enterprise licensing, not to individual buyers. A TAN Buster free download offered by a third-party site is not a foundry release, and it does not come with a licence you can rely on for paid work.

According to the listing, which went live on 22 February 2021, a licence gets you:

  • OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 files
  • Multilingual character support
  • Free future updates

Prices shown when we checked: Desktop $17 per seat, Webfont $17, E-pub $34 and App $136, with small promotional discounts on the last three.

Reading the letterforms

The listing describes TAN Buster as a retro-inspired display typeface with a fun look, and says it takes cues from 1970s and 80s school lettering. The specimen and character set on this page, rendered from the licensed font files, show a black-weight face built on contrast. Most of each letter is solid ink, and the detail is carved out as thin slivers and hairlines.

The capitals show this most clearly. The A is a heavy right leg with a hairline left side that hooks over at the top. The middle arm of the E shrinks to a thin wedge, and the M and N rely on hairline diagonals between fat stems. The J and the Q both drop below the baseline, one in a hook and one in a sweeping tail, and the G curls into its own counter.

The lowercase is calmer. Look for the double-storey g, whose lower loop swings out to the left, and the j that ends in a curl. In the figures, the 4 has a hairline diagonal and the 7’s stem bends like a bow.

One detail to check: in our character-set render the # sign is small and drawn in thin lines, out of step with the heavy letters around it. Test it before you set a hashtag in a large headline.

Hairlines this thin need size. TAN Buster looks its best at headline scale; in small text the narrow cuts begin to fill in.

Inside the TAN Buster download

  • Styles: one, labelled Bold in the font files.
  • Glyphs: 343, covering capitals, lowercase, figures, punctuation and accented letters.
  • Formats: our licensed files are OTF; the listing says TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 are included as well.
  • Version: 1.000, a static font rather than a variable one.
  • Credits: the font files name Novia Jonatan as designer; the publisher is TanType Co.

The listing does not mention mockups, SVG files or ornaments, so expect the fonts alone.

Accents, fractions and other technical details

The character set covers Basic Latin, Western European and Central and Eastern European letters. Accented text in languages such as Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Polish, Czech or Hungarian should set without gaps.

Two OpenType features are built in:

  • Kerning adjusts the gap between specific letter pairs, such as T followed by a, so the spacing looks even. It works automatically in nearly every app, including Canva, Word and the Adobe programs.
  • Fractions turn 1/2 or 3/4 into a single stacked fraction. You switch this on in apps with OpenType controls, for example the OpenType panel in Illustrator and InDesign or the Typography panel in Affinity. Canva and Cricut Design Space don’t offer it.

There are no stylistic alternates, swashes or ligatures, and nothing sits in the Private Use Area. For Canva and Cricut users that means no hidden extras: every letter is reachable by typing.

Where it earns its place, and what to set beside it

The listing suggests mastheads, logos, event promotions and social media graphics. The letter shapes back that up, and they also suit anything with a sweet or nostalgic tone: bakery and ice-cream branding, candle or soap labels, record and cassette covers, retro menu headings. Keep it to a word or a short line. A full paragraph in TAN Buster gets heavy fast.

Partners should stay quiet. Three free Google Fonts that work:

  • Work Sans for body copy and small print, plain enough not to argue with the headline.
  • Libre Caslon Text when you want an old-fashioned editorial feel under a magazine-style masthead.
  • Space Mono for prices, dates and labels on posters and packaging.

Licence basics before you use it commercially

TAN Buster is sold under Creative Market’s font licence. The Desktop licence covers “unlimited commercial and personal projects”, including print, packaging, social media and paid ads, but on websites and in apps the font must appear as an image, not as an embedded font file. Embedding it on a live site needs the Webfont licence, which carries a pageview limit set at checkout, and e-books and apps each need their own licence. Buy one seat for each person who uses the font.

Logos have a specific rule: Creative Market says a font may be part of a logo if it is modified and not the dominant element. Read that clause before you build a wordmark. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

Installing the TAN Buster font

Download TAN Buster from your Creative Market purchases and unzip it. Install one desktop format (OTF is the safer pick) and keep the WOFF and WOFF2 files for websites.

  • Windows: right-click the OTF file and choose Install, or Install for all users.
  • Mac: double-click the OTF file and click Install in Font Book.

In Canva, upload the file through Brand Kit; custom font uploads need a paid Canva plan.

Free fonts that get close to TAN Buster

If a licence is out of budget, these three free Google Fonts cover part of the job. None of them reproduces TAN Buster’s carved hairlines, as the comparison image shows.

  • Shrikhand shares the weight and the 70s sweetness. In the comparison it is slanted throughout and its strokes stay thick everywhere, so the result is closer to a painted shop sign than to cut paper.
  • Rubik Mono One sets a flat, blocky line of capitals in which every letter is the same width, like a scoreboard.
  • Bebas Neue goes the other way: narrow, upright capitals with straight sides. Pick it for a tight column or a poster with many words, not for charm.

TAN Buster FAQ

Can I get TAN Buster without paying?

Not legitimately. We found no official TAN Buster free download or demo. The cheapest route is the $17 Desktop licence on Creative Market.

Does the Desktop licence cover products I sell?

Creative Market’s Desktop terms allow commercial use in finished products such as printed packaging and merchandise. Logo use has the extra condition described above.

Will the TAN Buster font work in Canva?

Yes, if you upload the licensed OTF on a paid Canva plan. Nothing is hidden in the Private Use Area, so you get the whole character set.

Who is behind TAN Buster?

The font files credit Novia Jonatan, and the font is published by TanType Co. tmfonts has no connection to the foundry.

Which free font looks most like TAN Buster?

Shrikhand comes closest in mood, though it is slanted and has far less contrast.
