Design style
September Spirit is a casual handwritten script that leans hard into imperfection as a design strategy. The strokes have the slight wobble and inconsistent pressure of a felt-tip pen moving quickly across paper, and the letters connect with genuine flow rather than the mechanical joins you get from a lot of script fonts built purely from a single alphabet. Sam Parrett has clearly worked from real handwriting samples, and it shows in the way individual letters lean and drift rather than sitting on a rigid baseline.
What separates this from the glut of similar handwritten scripts is the alternate letterform set. Rather than relying on a handful of swash variants, the duo ships a second complete alphabet with different letter shapes, so repeated words don’t fall into an obvious repeating pattern. That’s a real production decision, not a gimmick, and it’s the part of the brief worth paying attention to.
