LiebeHeide: a bitmap color script font for authentic handwritten messages

Design style

LiebeHeide is not drawn in the usual sense — it is scanned. The letterforms come from high-resolution digitized ballpoint pen lettering, and that origin shows in every stroke. You get the slight pressure changes, the faint texture of ink meeting paper, the small inconsistencies that no vector script convincingly fakes. It reads as handwriting because it is, more or less, a photograph of handwriting.

This is a color font built on bitmap images rather than outlines, which is a different animal from the OpenType-SVG color fonts most designers are used to. It changes what you can and can’t do with it, and that trade-off runs through the whole review.

Character set and features

The glyph count is generous — close to 500 — and a lot of that budget goes into alternate letterforms and ligatures designed to break up repetition, which matters enormously in a script meant to pass as real handwriting. Doodles, underlines (single and double), strikethroughs, and self-assembling symbols round it out: type <3 and get a heart, :-) becomes a smiley, arrow combinations resolve into actual arrows. It's a genuinely deep set for a handwriting font, and the automatic assembly means you don't have to hunt through a glyph panel to find them.

The catch is the bitmap construction. Colour cannot be changed inside a text editor — you’re locked to whatever was baked into the image, and any recolouring has to happen afterward in Photoshop. Scalability is limited too: past roughly 5cm x-height the letters start to blur, which rules out large-format use outright. And support is narrow — Adobe Creative Cloud apps and native Mac OS software only, not Creative Suite, and nothing on the Windows or web side that isn’t explicitly compatible. If your workflow lives in a browser-based tool or an older Adobe version, this font simply won’t render as intended. Language coverage is Latin, Western European and Central European, which is fine for most European-market work but not global.

Use cases

This is a font for small, intimate, print-adjacent jobs: greeting cards, invitations, packaging copy, social graphics where a message needs to look like it was actually written by hand rather than typeset to resemble one. The self-assembling doodles and symbols make it fast to add charm to a layout without importing separate illustration assets. It works best set against a light or white background, per the designer’s own guidance — on darker backgrounds you’re stuck fiddling with a Darken layer effect, and it never quite convinces the way it does on paper-white.

What it isn’t suited for is anything that needs the mark to scale big — hero headlines, signage, large posters — or anything running through a design pipeline outside Adobe CC and macOS-native apps. Treat it as a texture and mood tool for close-up, screen-or-print-at-modest-size work, not as a flexible display typeface you can drop anywhere. Within that narrow lane, it does its one job with more conviction than most vector scripts manage.

LiebeHeide delivers a genuinely convincing handwritten texture thanks to its bitmap, scanned-pen construction, with a deep set of ligatures and self-assembling doodles to back it up. But the bitmap format caps its scalability and locks it to a narrow band of software, so it suits small, intimate print and screen work far better than anything ambitious in scale or reach.
